I'm a beginner / overweight / unfit - Is Ashtanga Yoga for me?
YES. A corner stone of this method of practice is ‘one pose at a time’. As a beginner, you will be taught the basics of the Ashtanga Vinyasa sequence and will progress as you become proficient in what you’ve already been given. In other words, you will not be given more than you can handle. It will be challenging, but it won’t be impossible.
What should I bring with me / What should I wear?
A curious and open mind. Aside from that, comfortable clothing that won’t restrict your movement. Bare feet. A yoga mat anda cotton rug to place on your mat. Some students also like to bring along a small towel as it can get quite sweaty.
Hygiene is a very important part of the practice, so please do shower prior to getting on the mat!
Do I need to follow a special diet?
No, you do not need to go on a special diet to begin an Ashtanga yoga practice. People of all shapes and sizes come through my doors everyday to learn yoga. After practising for some time, some individuals may begin to feel the urge to eat lightly especially for their last meal of the day, so as not to feel sluggish when they get on the mat the next morning.
While you are not restricted in terms of dietary habits, it is recommended that you refrain from eating anything at least four hours prior to getting on the mat. One should ideally practice on an empty stomach.
Are mats and towels provided?
For hygiene reasons, it is recommend that you bring your own mat to class. However, house mats are available for use should you require them. Towels are not provided so please remember to bring your own.
How Often should I practice?
Ashtanga yoga is a 6-day a week practice, with rest to be taken one day a week, as well during moon days (twice a month) and during the first three days of ladies’ menstrual cycle. To ease yourself into an Ashtanga practice, start with three times a week. Commit to this for at least a month and then decide if Ashtanga is the right method for you.
Are there shower facilities?
Yes. You may shower after your practice, and be fresh and ready for your next appointment!
How long is a class?
On the schedule, the class may look like it lasts for 120 or 150 mins. However, students will stay only as long as they need to. Each individual practices at their own pace and will take a different length of time to complete their practice. In general, it can take anywhere between 45 and 100 minutes to complete your practice.
